This is the story of Raju from Nizamabad. While sleeping one cold winter night, 4 year old Raju rolled into the bonfire that was built to generate warmth. The little one’s face, eyebrows, eyelids and eyelashes were burnt. He was left with eyes that could not be closed, even whilst he slept. The physical injury apart, what traumatised the child the most was the reaction he received from the people around him. Other children refused to play with him and he was even banned from attending school as his classmates found his appearance to be scary. Raju used to sneak in and sit behind the entire class after the school session began in order to avoid detection and mockery. Raju underwent treatment and surgery under the expert team of doctors who set up camps in order to treat burn victims. His burn contractions were released and new eyelids were built. Today, post surgery, Raju is back in his beloved classroom and is a model student.
